Operation Iraqi Freedom
2003 Iraq War (3/20/2003-) is presently the largest war operation in the world, started when U.S. president George W Bush launched a combat operation against Iraq, with the stated goal of deposing dictator Saddam Hussein, finding Weapons of Mass Destruction and liberating the Iraqi people. The conflict is a central front in the global war on terror.
By May 1, 2003 A.D., the United States had succeeded at the first goal and had Hussein executed; the second goal was rendered irrelevant, and the third goal was largely successful (as the Iraqi people are now free of Hussein.) President Bush celebrated this victory by declaring "Mission Accomplished" on the battleship U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln.
Despite the relative success of the war, there exists a large debate over topics such as withdrawal of American forces and the role of nations in the region.
Research using robust surveying techniques has estimated that fewer than 65,000 Iraqis have died[1] as a result of the war, although many Iraqi civilians have fled to neighboring Jordan and Syria.
