Herb Alpert
Herbert "Herb" Alpert was born in Los Angeles on March 31, 1935. Introduced to the trumpet at just eight years of age, he would gain fame as the leader of the Tijuana Brass and with his partner, Jerry Moss, would be the âAâ in the very successful A&M Records.
In 1963 âThe Lonely Bullâ landed in the top ten of the Hit Parade. A year later âA Taste of Honeyâ did the same followed by âZorba the Greek.â As a vocalist, Herb Alpertâs âThus Guyâs In Love With Youâ reached #1 in 1968, as did another instrumental, âRiseâ in 1979. He would be the only recording artist in history to top the charts with both an instrumental and a vocal.
âThe Mexican Shuffle,â âWhat Now My Love,â âSpanish Flea,â âThe Word Song,â âFlamingoâ and âMameâ were among dozens of hit singles that fueled the sale of more than 75 million albums world- wide and earned numerous Grammyâs. In 1966 the Tijuana Brass had five albums on the best seller charts,four of them in the top ten simultaneously.
Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss each have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received a Grammy Award in 1997 for their lifetime achievements in the recording industry.
In 2006, both Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
