Jarrow

Jarrow is a former industrial town in the district of South Tyneside, part of the Tyneside conurbation, in north-east England. It is known as the location of St Paul's Abbey in the Anglo-Saxon period, where Bede did much of his work[1]. From the mid nineteenth century to Jarrow was a company town, being dominated economically and physically by the shipyard of Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company Ltd. The closure of the yard in 1935 was a devastating blow to the town and prompted the famous Jarrow Crusade, a hunger march in October 1936 of unemployed workers from Jarrow to London[2].
