Aliyah, transliterated from the Hebrew ×¢××××, which literally translates as "ascent", is the term used in reference to the Jewish immigration to the state of Israel in 1948, after its modern establishment. The opposite, the Jewish emmigration from Israel, is termed Yerida, "descent".
