Pluralism describes an organizational structure in which different types of ideas, persons, or groups can coexist. For example, "religious pluralism," often used to describe the United States when compared to pre-modern nation states, suggests a polity in which different religious groups exist coequally with one another, at least as far as rights vis a vis the government are concerned.
