Derry

Derry is one of six counties in Northern Ireland, and also the name of the main city in the county. Both county and city are also known as Londonderry.
Derry is reputed to have been founded by St. Columba in 546. The town was named Derry (from the Irish for "oak grove"). In 1613 the area was awarded to the city of London and renamed Londonderry. In 1689 it was beseiged by James II for 105 days before being relieved.
Today the name is a source of controversy, with (roughly) Protestants/Unionists using the name Londonderry and Catholics/Republicans calling it Derry. As a compromise, the name is often written as Derry/Londonderry ("Derry-stroke-Londonderry"), giving rise to the nickname Stroke City.
