Stockton on Tees is an industrial town in County Durham, north-east England, located on the River Tees. It achieved renown as being the first terminus of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first public railway to employ steam locomotives; and is also famous for its High Street, which, doubling as a market place, is the widest in England. Harold Macmillan was MP for Stockton in the 1930s and his experiences in the depression-hit town helped to mould his centrist brand of Conservatism.
