Amicus curiae

An amicus curiae is a "friend of the court", which is an independent party that submits a brief to a court to alert it to issues not fully addressed by the plaintiffs or defendants.
Amicus curiae briefs are most often filed with the U.S. Supreme Court. An attorney must be a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court to file a brief there.
