Laban was the brother of Rebekah who first helped to bring about her marriage to Isaac when he saw the lavish gifts he bestowed. When Jacob, the son of Rebekah, flees from his brother Esau, he stays with his uncle Laban and agrees to work for seven years to marry his daughter Rachel. Laban tricks Jacob however, and gives him his older daughter Leah instead. Jacob then works for seven more years to marry Rachel. Jacob stays with Laban for twenty years total and Laban's wealth grows greatly during that time period due to Jacob. Still, when Jacob goes to leave, Laban at first overtakes him and stops him, although he does eventually let Jacob go.
