Liberal values

In political science, liberalism refers to the belief that significant changes in the status quo are a desirable course of action. Liberal values are therefore those that reexamine social or political conventions and their implications. The term applies differently to different cultures or time periods based on the status quo. For example, a liberal value in contemporary America might be ensuring a fair distribution of wealth, but in the time of Christ could be proposing that people ought to worship differently from the style of the Romans.
