The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States. Arriving at the entrance of New York harbor on June 17, 1884, the Statue of Liberty has proudly stood there ever since.[Citation Needed] The statue stands nearly 150 feet tall and is a woman with her arm held high with a lit torch. In her other hand she is clutching a book.

In 1903 an inscription was added on the inside which reads, in part:

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

It was designated as a national monument in 1924.[1] See: The New Colossus
