Philip Pullman

Philip Pullman is the atheist author of His Dark Materials, a trilogy of fantasy novels for young adults where the ultimate victory is killing the Judeo-Christian God. He has written several other books which have generated no controversy. A movie based off The Golden Compass, the first in His Dark Materials, was released in 2007.

Critics brand his books subversively anti-religious. Defenders point to the facts that they are only stories and contain moral themes that correlate with the ones religions promote. His books actually have overtones against organized religion and blind obedience, not necessarily against the peaceful practice of religion on its own. He has stated that he only has a problem with religious organizations having political power, as opposed to religion itself.
