Transvaal

The Transvaal is a former province of South Africa, located in the north of the country, north of the River Vaal which seperated it from the Orange Free State. The name was informally attached to the quasi-independent South African Republic, which existed from the 1870s until it was conquered by Britain during the Boer War, and was used by the British as the official name of the newly-acquired territory.
