An Ankh is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic symbol for "life", consisting of a loop above a "T", often found in tombs near depictions of Egyptian gods. It represents a sandal's ankle strap, with which it has the same phonetic value. There has been conjecture that the symbol is a representation of the (lifegiving) sun rising across the water. It figures frequently in personal names; e.g. Tutankhamen, Ankhesenamun. It has been used in more modern times and pop culture to symbolize life.
