Henry Jackson

Henry "Scoop" Jackson was a Democratic Party senator and, according to President Ronald Reagan, "a wise and revered statesman and one who probably understood the Soviets as well as any American in history." [1]
He sought the Democratic Party nomination for President in 1972 and 1976 but did poorly in the primaries. "Scoop" Jackson was known as a Conservative Democrat who from 1972 on was out of step with the party's liberal activists but remained a popular U.S. Senator from his home state of Washington until his death in 1983.
