Wikipedia is a free-content online encyclopedia established by Jimbo Wales and Larry Sangers on January 15, 2001. It currently has over 6 million articles, written in 250 languages[1] on various topics, including over 1,600,000 articles in the English version. Like Conservapedia, it is a wiki that is written and edited by its users. Under its GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), anyone can add to or edit the content on Wikipedia.
Initially, Wikipedia was hosted on servers operated by Bomis Incorporated, a pornographic venture funded by Jimbo Wales. Then in 2003, Jimbo Wales created the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit charity with himself as president, to oversee the day-to-day operation of Wikipedia.
Wikipedia and Bias
Wikipedia has been accused by Conservapedia of containing biased entries. The article detailing allegations of these is found here: Examples of Bias in Wikipedia. Wikipedia aims to represent a neutral point of view - a neutral point of view is a fundamental Wikipedia principle - but there are several articles that do not represent this neutral point of view. This happens partly due to Wikipedia's open nature, although there are on-going attempts to ensure that bias is clearly identified or altered where necessary. Wikipedia is also accused by some of having "ingrained" liberal biascitation needed. Wikipedia differs from Conservapedia in its bias, as Conservapedia defines itself as "a conservative encyclopedia", aiming to represent the views of the right therefore purposefully having a bias.
