GDR

The German Democratic Republic was the eastern German State founded by German Communists in 1949. It was backed by the USSR who had a strategic interest in this most western forepost. However, it vanished from existence in 1989 by a peaceful revolution. Unlike other socialist countries there were actually several Parties allowed (hence the name 'Democratic' Republic), but their influence was limited by law.
