Onanism

Onanism is a sin which was committed by Onan, who was punished by God for committing it (Genesis 38:7-10). The exact sin is subject to dispute. A popular intrepretation is that Onanism is engaging in sexual intercourse dishonestly by not permitting reproduction. This act is considered sinful by the Roman Catholic Church. The traditional Jewish view suggests the sin may have been in disobeying an order from God, or even the lack of putting the family needs before his own. Onanism can also refer to the sin of self abuse.
