Litmus test

Litmus test refers to the use of litmus paper as a pH indicator. It is also a phrase referring to questions designed to determine a person's opinion of social issues.
Chemistry
In chemistry, a piece of litmus paper is placed in a solution. Chemical reactions withacids cause it to turn red, while reactions with alkalines cause it to turn blue.
Politics
The phrase "litmus test" is applied to questions designed to determine a person's opinion of social issues.
Example
"Where do you stand on Roe v. Wade" is a typical litmus test on the issue of abortion.
