Provenance

Provenance refers to the history of creation, ownership, and transfer of title of a work of art, or an artifact. Because of an upsurge in prosecutions for looted art in the United States, most museums ask that a seller or donor prove the provenance of a work of art or artifact upon its transfer to the museum, thus discouraging the looting of artwork.
