Urdu

A language spoken in Pakistan and northern India. Urdu and Hindi are mutually intelligible and many linguists consider them to be dialects of the same language, rather than two separate languages. However, most speakers of these languages disagree, pointing out that they are separated by a political barrier. In addition, Hindi is written with a syllabic alphabet descended from Sanskrit, while Urdu is written in a modified form of the Arabic script.
