Landfill

Landfills are organized waste-disposal facilities in which layers of garbage are dumped, often with layers of soil in between, in an effort to encourage decomposition of organic waste.
Landfills are often considered harmful because decomposition does take place in them very much. Composting and recycling are alternatives to landfill dumping.
