A terrorist group which aims to create an independent Basque country in northern Spain. It was founded in 1959, and is responsible for approximately 900 killings, including a number of political and law enforcement figures.
The group declared a "permanent ceasefire" on March 22 2006. Since then there have been several illegal acts by ETA such as the bombing of Madrid Barajas international airport in which two people died. Notwithstanding this ETA claims its ceasefire is still in force - an opinion which is rejected by the Spanish government.
