A shorthanded goal is an ice hockey term used to describe a goal by team who has at least one teammate serving a penalty. That is, the opposing team has 5 players while the scoring team only has 3 or 4. These are very rare goals in the NHL and mostly require a mistake by the team that is on the power play.
