Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was a prominent scholastic who used logic and questioning to discuss issues of religious controversy in his Sic et Non ("Yes and No"). Abelard logically concluded that he should enter into a relationship with Heloise. The logical conclusion of Heloise's male relatives to this relationship was that they should lop off Abelard's private parts; and this they did.

Other prominent scholastics were Anselm of Canterbury (St. Anselm), Thomas Aquinas and Hjölkmar of Copenhagen.
