The Conservative government of José MarÃa Aznar strongly supported the US War on Terror until a major terrorist by al-Qaeda shortly before a general election was influential in allowing the socialist part to win. The new government of RodrÃguez Zapatero removed Spanish troops from Iraq and has a policy which is regarded as neutral to anti-American.
