1. Identify the time period of the Middle Ages, and when the Crusades occurred within that period.

The Crusades lasted from A.D. 1096- 1291. The First Crusade was in 1099 and was a huge success. The Second Crusade was lead in 1147 and didn’t end until 1149 and was a failure. Several other Crusades were also put together, but they all failed. Even the Children’s Crusade in 1212 failed terribly.

2. Who conquered the largest contiguous region in world history, and when?

The Mongols conquered the largest contiguous region in all of world history. They came from northwest China and central Asia. They were founded by Chinggis Khan in A.D. 1206. The Mongol empire was incredibly powerful and lasted until the 1300’s.

3. Which of these modern countries were able to establish nation-states in the Middle Ages, and which were not: Germany, France, England and Italy?

Italy and Germany were not able to establish nation-states in the Middle Ages.

4. Pick your favorite medieval architecture and describe something about it.

I really like Gothic architecture. I love the way the flying buttresses and stain glass windows represent an age where people were so infatuated with God that there architecture even reflected it.

5. Pick one of the African kingdoms described in the lecture, and explain it.

One African kingdom was the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. It existed in A.D. 1200s to the 1500s and controlled southeastern Africa all the way to the Indian Ocean. The city of Great Zimbabwe was based on trade. This society revolved around trading slaves, ivory, goods from other lands, and gold.

6. Pick your favorite aspect of Scholasticism, and describe something about it, or your view of it. I love how the people involved in Scholasticism were determined to prove that God really existed through logic. Christians do not really try to prove God exists through logical thinking any more. Now Theism is seen as something that only the people who have ‘faith but not reason’ believe in. We should use Anselm’s argument that God exists through simply looking at the definition of God to try to win people to Christ today.

7. H3. Do you think Joan of Arc had a calling from God?

I believe that Joan of Arc did have a calling from God. There is no other explanation or motivation for her actions.
