An acronym is an abbreviationism pronounced as a real word. North Atlantic Treaty Organization is routinely pronounced 'nay-toe', and spelled, as a proper noun, Nato (the other letters are not capped).
Scuba, Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, aka "scuba" is another famous acronym.
