Soccer

Soccer is the term used in North America to refer to what is more commonly known as "football". The name derived in England as slang for "Association Football" (a similar construction can be seen in referring to rugby as "rugger"), it is the most popular sport in the world although it has failed to gain popularity in the United States and Canada.

Soccer is a ball game played between two teams of 11 players (10 outfield players and one goalkeeper each) over two 45 minute halves separated by a 15 minute break known as half-time.

The game is played on a grass (or artificial grass) pitch with dimensions 90-120m in length and 45m-90m in width A goal is scored when the (spherical) ball is kicked or headed into the opposition net.

The aim of soccer is to score more goals than your opponent.
