The Cold War was a military standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union. There was no direct fighting between the superpowers, but a nuclear arms race did ensue. They each built many nuclear bombs in an effort to intimidate the other side. The United States had various allies and the Soviet Union had various allies. Some of these allies fought each other directly, leading to many wars around the world. The United States armed its allies and the Soviet Union armed theirs. This policy sometimes backfired and both sides suffered embarrassing defeats in the proxy wars, the US in Vietnam and the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. The Cold War ended in 1989 with the fall of the Soviet Union.
