Syndecdoche

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by JonathanG (talk | contribs) at 17:13, June 27, 2009. It may differ significantly from current revision.

When only a portion of something is used to denote the whole thing. "Lend me your ears", "I left my heart in Texas", and "Tickets are $10 a head" are all syndecdoches. The ears, heart, and head do not refer to severed body parts, but whole people.
