He represented the modern society and its evils, the corruption of the green countryside, and the industrialization of society, in J.R.R. Tolkien's eyes a great evil.

Mr Wilson is correct in making this statement. It is well known amongst Tolkien scholars that J R R Tolkien had a particular loathing for the industrialisation of England, especially in farming and how it affected the Home Counties, the area of England that Tolkien based the Shire on.
