Internal combustion engine

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by ChrisZ (talk | contribs) at 15:11, July 28, 2009. It may differ significantly from current revision.

An internal combustion engine is one in which the fuel is burned inside the engine itself. An example is an automobile engine where the gasoline/air mixture burns inside the engines cylinder and the expanding gases drive the piston. A steam engine is not an internal combustion engine since the fuel is burned outside the engine.
