A landfill in Australia

Landfills are organized waste-disposal facilities in which layers of garbage are dumped, often with layers of soil in between, to encourage decomposition of organic waste.

Environmentalists and other critics frequently complain about landfills, among other reasons because they do not facilitate the decomposition of waste. Critics advocate composting and recycling as alternatives, as far as organic and recyclable waste is concerned. Some critics advocate waste incineration, as well excoriating waste in general.
