Fish and chips are a popular British fast food. The fish is a piece of common white fish (typically cod, haddock, plaice or skate) deep fried in batter. The chips are sliced deep-fried potatoes similar to but more substantial than French fries. They are traditionally served in paper, seasoned with salt and vinegar.
In the north of England, fish and chips may be served with additional portions of mushy peas, curry sauce or even gravy.
