Svalbard

Svalbard or Spitsbergen is an archipelago and territory of the Kingdom of Norway in the Barents Sea. Its capital, Longyearbyen, is the world's northernmost city. The population of Svalbard includes a significant Russian community which has for decades worked coal mines in the islands by agreement between the former Soviet Union and Norway[1]. Other economic activities include 'ice tourism' [2]. Whaling was formerly an important economic activity.[3]
