Cesar Chavez was a labor organizer who started one of the first farm workers unions and organized boycotts of farmers who opposed unionization.
Early Life
He was born on a farm near Yuma, Arizona owned by his parents. His family lost their holdings in the Great Depression and moved to California to work in the fields.
Cesar was exposed firsthand to the bad working conditions of migrant laborers, which is believed to have shaped the direction his life took. As a child, he began to develop a nonviolent worldview, which he practiced his entire life.
He enlisted in the Navy to escape from the farms. After joining, he found that he disliked the Navy. Needless to say, he did not reenlist when his two year contract expired.
