In May of 2010, Bennett failed to garner the support of the 40 percent of the delegates he needed in order to win the right to appear on the primary ballot. He finished third and last behind a businessman and a Tea Party Movement-sympathetic attorney. He therefore will be leaving the Senate after this session of Congress is ended.[3]
