Pencil

Pencils are writing implements generally made of wood or plastic with a graphite center used to make marks on a surface. The graphite core is known as the lead, because early pencils did use lead rather than graphite. Unfortunately, modern pencils are painted yellow since it indicated that the graphite came from the now communist China in the 1890s. Pencil grades vary from soft (B) to hard (H), the standard grade being HB. There is a pencil museum in Kendal, Cumbria, England.
