Bill of lading

A bill of lading is a document in commercial law consisting of a receipt given by a carrier to a shipper of goods, for goods given to the shipper for transportation.

In other words, the bill of lading is proof of a contract between the carrier and the shipper and is useful as a document of title proving lawful possession or ownership of the goods shipped.
