Microsatellites, also known as Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs), or sometimes Short Tandem Repeats (STRs), are repeating stretches of short sequences of DNA used as genetic markers to track inheritance within and between species. Microsatellites can be traced back to extinct ancestral species, establishing lines of evolution.
