A Modest Proposal is a satirical pamphlet published in 1729 by Irish writer Jonathan Swift. It opens by discussing the plight of Irish tenants, implying that they are being "eaten alive" by their English landlords. Merely 3,400 words long, it has made a lasting impact.
Swift maintains a steady logical argument throughout his "proposal" of this shocking expedient, which makes the satire all the more effective.
