Gone With the Wind is the title of a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Margaret Mitchell, and a 1939 Academy Award-winning film adaptation of the book. The novel, published in 1936, was Mitchell's only literary product. Gone with the Wind is set in and around Atlanta, Georgia, during and after the American Civil War. Scarlett O'Hara, the story's heroine, is the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner who faces poverty during reconstruction. English actress Vivien Leigh portrays Scarlett O'Hara in the film. American actor Clark Gable played Rhett Butler. The book and movie have been criticized by liberals for romanticizing the Civil War and downplaying racism, but millions of copies of the novel have been sold, and the film is one of the top-grossing movies of all time.
