Pencils are writing utensils generally made of wood or plastic with a graphite center used to make marks on a surface. T The graphite core is known as 'lead', though it isn't, because early pencils did use lead not graphite. They differ from pens because their marks can be erased. Number two pencils are preferred for standardized tests, though a great many other densities of graphite are used for other purposes. Pecil grades vary from soft (B) to hard (H), the standard grade being HB. There is a pencil museum in Kendal, Cumria, England which is very good on a rainy day.
