Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Metaphorically, it can also mean 'the beginning', as in 'the alpha and the omega'.

In software development, 'alpha' is a very early stage of release, prior to beta testing. Alpha was also the name of a family of RISC microprocessors developed and sold by Digital Equipment Corporation. The Alpha intellectual property was bought by Intel, but the product line was discontinued.al
