Hu Shi (1891-1962) was a Chinese writer and philosopher. Heavily influenced by pragmatists in the United States exemplified by John Dewey, he advocated modern reforms in China and adoption of vernacular language. After communist takeover of the country in 1949, he later moved to and became active in Taiwan.
