The Hunger Games is a 2012 film based on a 2008 novel by Suzanne Collins. The film tells the story of a group of 24 teenagers forced to fight to the death by a corrupt fascist government. The heroine is 16 year old Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Collins) who volunteers for the Games in place of her 12 year old sister who was selected in the ballot.
Political Symbolism
The government which organises the Games is The Capitol, a clear reference to Washington, DC and the Federal government. The twelve "districts" which make up the rest of the nation of Panem are the remains of the United States. Twelve districts and The Capitol gives a total of thirteen political entities, matching the original thirteen colonies.
