Stephen R. Covey (1932-2012) was the author of the best selling The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and other management and business titles. He earned an MBA at Harvard and a doctorate in Mormon Church History and Doctrine from Brigham Young University.

The seven habits Covey prescribes are

  1. Be proactive
  2. Begin with the end in mind
  3. Put first things first
  4. Think win/win
  5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen the saw

Proactive as defined by Stephen Covey means that you don't just let life happen to you, and don't respond "by instinct" like a dog. [1]

Notes

  1. ↑ Broadly what is meant by that is to focus our efforts and attention on the long-term and to think in terms of the long-term consequences of our actions. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
