Hellenistic means anything relating to Greek history, culture, and art after the life of Alexander the Great. Hellenization was the process of adopting a Hellenistic view, culture and Greek ways, but also atheism and worship of Greek idols - Idolatry. Ancient Israel had a great deal of difficulty in keeping Jewish culture separate from the influences of Hellenization and the clash of cultures among the Jewish people sometimes manifested itself in violent ways, the empire oppressing them.
