Alternative rock is a subgenre of rock that gained popularity in the 1990s with artists such as Beck, Radiohead, and Portishead. Alternative rock tends to be very popular on college radio stations but passed over in favor of more "mainstream" music like Nickelback on most radio stations.[1]
